Welcome to our "New" Corporate Headquarters
We Have Moved and Expanded to Serve You Even Better

We are so excited about moving into our "New" building we have been at our old location for 25 years.

When we started planning our move, our biggest concern was trying to figure out how we were going to make this huge move after 25 years, without closing down; we knew closing during the move could be very inconvenient for our clients and we did not want to disrupt your service or deliveries.

So, now I have to brag on the most amazing Teamwork ever: the Tammy Taylor Team planned and organized this move so well it was like a beautifully choreographed performance.
(And, we have a lot of stuff, we doubled our space and we have it almost filled up already.)
We were completely Moved In, with every box Un-Packed, over 125 Pictures hung, Computers and Phones in Full Service, Shipping and Warehousing Completely Set-Up Ready to Ship and the Classroom ready for Classes "IN ONLY 3 DAYS" without closing!!!!!!!!!
So, if you are thinking you didn't even know we moved "then our mission was accomplished". Below are some pictures I thought you would enjoy of everyone in our new location.

Nails are so much fun, it is easy to get into a situation where they are more like a hobby and you are no longer making a profit.
But…Look at all you have invested in your Profession already:
So much of your Time and Money and Energy, have been spent on your Education and your Products.
So… Now, It Is Time to Start Making Money$$
You are a Professional and Nails are your Career, they can no longer be a hobby.

Any Nail Service you are presently doing which you are not making a PROFIT of at least $25.00 to $40.00 an hour, stop investing your time, energy, and money into it right now (you can always come back to it later when you have time to perfect it, so you can make a profit).
Because, what happens is when we stop making a profit, we get discouraged, and we lose our motivation to build our business. And... when we lose our motivation, our nail services start getting sloppy, and our Customer Service starts diminishing.

Choose the Nail "Service" which you are the best at; the Nail "Service" you get the most return customers from; not necessarily the Nail "Service" you like to do most, because this might not be a big money maker, even though it might be more fun.

Once you decide what your Specialty is, you need to PERFECT it even more!

Spend all of your extra time and energy, BECOMING the VERY BEST at ONE TYPE of NAIL SERVICE first.
Once you have Mastered this Nail "Service", and you are making a GOOD PROFIT from it, then you can expand to Mastering ONE MORE NAIL SERVICE.
When both of your Nail Service Specialties are making Money, then you can add one more Nail "Service", but... be CAREFUL, once a Nail "Service" is not making you a GOOD PROFIT, either Master it so you can charge more, or Stop doing it.

When doing Pink & White Acrylic Nails, the Pink Acrylic can run onto your White Free-Edge, causing your White Free-Edge to have a pink cast to it, and making your Smile-Line blurry instead of crisp.

Q: What is the "Secret" to eliminate a blurry Smile-Line?

A: Surface Tension is the #1 Secret.
Also, it is important to remember: Don't Place the Pink Acrylic Ball too close to the White Free-edge, and don’t make your Pink Acrylic too thick.

Q: How do I get "Surface Tension"?

Answer:

"Place" the Pink Acrylic Ball on the Nail-Bed; leaving a gap between the Pink & the White.
Do "Not" Touch the White Free-Edge when Placing your Pink Acrylic Ball.

"Lift" your brush & Let your Pink Acrylic Ball Flow (count 1-2-3) this develops "Surface Tension".

"Stroke" your Pink Acrylic Ball using long strokes, stroke right over the top of the White Free-Edge.

The "Surface Tension". on the Pink Acrylic Ball will keep the Pink from running onto the White.
Finish your Pink and White Acrylic Nails by applying 2 more Pink Acrylic Balls; Place one at the Cuticle Area and Stroke it out, then Place the other one at the Stress Area and Stroke it out.
The Tammy Taylor Powders used: Whitest White Nail Powder on the Free-Edge and True Pink on the Nail-Bed.

I discourage making the same mistake "twice" (as this will hurt a business).

"Perfect Product Consistency is our ultimate goal, but... sometimes it is hard to get the Perfect Ball every time so, if your Acrylic Ball is TOO BIG, or TOO DRY, or TOO LITTLE, just WIPE IT OFF!
Only use Beautiful Acrylic Balls to create your Beautiful Acrylic Nails and your Product Application will be Faster, and you will have less Filing."

IMPORTANT:
Winter is coming, and the Colder it gets the SLOWER your Nail Liquid is going to set up.
So, before you start your day, hold your closed bottle of Nail Liquid under warm water for about 30 seconds; this will warm up your Nail Liquid and get it ready to do Beautiful Nails.

WATCH YOUR BRUSH:
When you are making an Acrylic Ball, always WATCH YOUR BRUSH as you drag it across your Nail Powder; so you can see the Acrylic Ball as you are making it. Then LOOK at the Acrylic Ball before you place it on the nail; if it is TOO BIG, or TOO DRY, or TOO LITTLE, then WIPE IT OFF, (Do Not Use it, just make a New Acrylic Ball)
A Beautiful Acrylic Ball will have the Look of a "PEARL".

Many of you may have heard me say many times, "Beautiful Balls = Beautiful Nails"; when you can create consistent Beautiful Acrylic "Balls", then you will be able to create "Fast, Beautiful Acrylic Nails".

"Pat the White - Stroke the Pink, 1-2-3-4."

The Tammy Taylor 4 BALL METHOD:

#1 BALL - White Free-edge Ball / the Largest Ball; PAT this Ball into shape

#2 BALL - Pink Ball, used for upper 1/2 of the Nail Body / Smaller, Wetter Ball; STROKE this Ball like applying polish

#3 BALL - Pink Ball, used for the Cuticle Area / Smaller, Wetter Ball; STROKE this Ball like applying polish (apply this Ball 1/32nd of an inch away from the cuticle area)

#4 BALL - Pink Ball, used to build up the Stress Area / Smallest, Wettest Ball; STROKE this Ball over the entire Nail (place the #4 Ball between the #2 and #3 Balls almost at the Cuticle area)

"Rollercoaster Ride Effect"

When you can eliminate the "Rollercoaster Ride Effect" you will have the time and energy to take advantage of more opportunities to build your business.

When you have 1 "great" busy week, then 1 bad "slow" week, or 1 bad "slow month", then 1 "great busy month", and so on... this is what I call the “Rollercoaster Ride Effect".

This Rollercoaster Ride makes you tired, stressed and worried about whether you will be able to cover your bills; since you are not sure if you are going to have a high "busy" week or a low "slow" week.

This is especially the case in the Salon Business; Nail Technicians book clients every 2 weeks, so what ends up happening; 1 week is jam-packed with clients (there isn't even an appt. available for a New Client, a Walk-in or a repair) then the next week is so slow it is like a ghost town.

This cycle is not only tiring and self-defeating for you, but... it is also discouraging for clients who want to get an appointment to see you.
How often on these busy weeks have you had to turn down new clients... and you think, where were they last week when my business was slow…

2-week standing Clients need to be spread out; HALF of the 2-week Clients need to be scheduled on ONE week and the other HALF of the 2-week Clients need to be scheduled on the NEXT week.

By spreading out Clients, you will know what your guaranteed income is every week (which gets you off the Rollercoaster), and it gives you the extra time availability in your schedule every day, so you can fit in "New" Clients, Walk-ins and repairs, which is crucial in order to keep your business healthy and growing.

If You are Available the Customers Will Come...

To stay competitive "MORE than ever before", we need to make ourselves more available to our customers and make everything more convenient for our customers.

Are you in your business working at least 40 Hours a week?
Do your customers know what Days and Hours you are at work?
Do your co-workers know what Days and Hours you will be at work?

In order to keep Clients and build a Clientele, customers need to know what Days and Hours you will be at work.
Let's say your customer is out doing errands, or they get off work early and they feel spontaneous and would like to have a service done, or buy some products, but they don't know your schedule. (you don’t want them to go somewhere else)...

Or...
A New "potential" customer is walking by your business and they are trying to find your hours, so they can come back later.

Anyone trying to run a business "without" having designated Days and Hours will have a tougher time "building" a Clientele and keeping a Clientele, especially in this New Economy.

Here are a few things that are very important to help you stay competitive and keep your business prospering:

Make sure your Days and Hours are posted where your Clients and "potential" customers can see them; like on your business card, your website and all promotional material.
Always be at your business during these times, even if you are not busy or if you get cancellations.
Answer phone calls when you are not with a customer instead of letting it go to voice mail, and when they do need go to voice mail call them back immediately when you get a break.
Make sure the Receptionist and all of your Co-Workers know your schedule and have your Cell#, in case a customer needs an appt. or has a question.

I have found through years of experience; even when you do not have appointments, "if you are at your business" and ready for customers "the customers will come"!

Create Your Own Work Environment

Some people like it calm
Some people like it exciting
Some people like a higher stress

Whatever environment helps you do your best is the environment you can create.

Now you might be thinking:
- My environment at work is determined by all those around me.
- But... It isn't; that is "their" environment "not" yours.

Our environment is directly related to HOW WE REACT to situations and HOW WE ACT towards others… "Not", how others act.

The greatest thing about creating our own environment is we "are" in control; which makes everything so much "more" fun, and we are "more" productive.
Have you ever been around someone who stays calm, cool and collected even in the craziest situations...

Or...

A person who has so much energy it feels like a whirlwind when they walk in the room…

Both have created their own environment.

To really ENJOY our Jobs and our Businesses, we need to make the Decision to Bring our "A" Game, every day!
This is the difference between just being good enough, and being GREAT.

Taking care of Customers 1st is the WAY TO BUILD A "STRONG" BUSINESS!

In today's business environment everything is so fast, and many times it seems like the bottom line $ "profit" is the only "motivation". However, without "happy" customers, there will eventually be no $ profit.

A Strong Business is "Built" on Building Relationships with Customers, and Getting Referrals.

Customers need to be treated like a friend; a friend who is appreciated; someone we would like to see coming back, for at least 20 years.
Isn't "Customer Service" really just a modern word for "Old Fashioned Hospitality"...

The dictionary meaning of hospitality:
(hos·pi·tal·i·ty)
1. the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers.
2. the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly, generous way.

Here are a few ideas of taking care of customers with "Old Fashioned Hospitality":

Graciously Giving a few extra moments of our time; as Time is the most valuable thing we can give our customers.
Slowing down and taking the time to listen to what the customer is saying:
- Do they have a problem or complaint; if so take it seriously and take the time to take care of it immediately.
- Does the customer need an explanation or clarification on a product or service which is offered; if so take the time to thoroughly explain until the customer feels they fully understand.
-Or, Does the customer just want to express how much they enjoy doing business with you; if so take the time to enjoy the moment and accept the accolades.

Customer service should never be determined by how much $ money a customer is spending...
- Or depend on how much someone gets paid to take care of a customer...

What about Customer Service which is done out of sheer love for the customer; Wouldn't this be what true Customer Service is about...

Gratitude reflects in our Attitude...

I was reading an article about gratitude and I started wondering "How much does being grateful really affect our happiness and can this affect our job and our business?"

So, I started thinking about all the times I feel really happy, and the times I don’t feel as happy, and I put them into 2 categories:
Category #1 "When I feel the HAPPIEST”

Category #2 "When I don’t feel as happy”

And... as I wrote my list, I was really surprised, because it became very clear to see:
Our level of Gratitude really can affect our job and our business.
When I feel the HAPPIEST is when I am feeling the most grateful; I am more productive in my work, I have more patience, I have more energy and I am more grateful to the people around me.

Something else I observed, which I thought was interesting: The most grateful people I know are also the happiest people I know, and there was no connection to how much money they had, what type of job they had, or how educated they were.

I was also thinking about: We not only need to be grateful for our own blessings, but we need to express our gratitude to those around us.

Some interesting statistics from a 2002 Public Agenda survey;
48% of adults expressed only "sometimes" did they encounter people who made an effort to say "please" and "thank you"
And...
16% of these adults said they "practically never" encounter people who made an effort to say "please" and "thank you”.

Here are 4 things we can do to help our "GRATITUDE reflect in our ATTITUDE":

#1 Take the time to express gratitude and appreciation, to the people around us each day

#2 Literally, Count all of the good things that happen each day

#3 Write down 5 of these good things that happened the day before, in a journal each day

#4 Go back to #1 and start again each day

Why is it important to write down all the good things that happen every day in a journal?
Because we have a tendency to dwell on the bad stuff and we easily forget the good things that happen; we need to have a daily reminder of all the good things that have happened in the past so we stay positive and focus on all of the good things that are going to happen today, and... in the future.

Quitting before a Dream has been achieved is probably done 80% more often than Dreams that are actually achieved.

Why do so many Dreams Fail?
Because we set our goals too high. (When a goal is set too high, it is frustrating and becomes too hard to achieve.)

I was thinking about my Blog "Step Back" where I was talking about writing a letter to our younger selves, and I was thinking there were so many times when I was young, I would want to go back and tell my younger self "trust your instincts, go with your first decision".

Now, making important decisions is "not" something "to just do quickly"; we always need to look at the Pro's and the Con's and the effects this decision will make. But our "first" instinct is correct the "majority" of the time.

#3 Write down any negatives, which will come from your decision (not things you think might happen, only what you know for sure)

Then you can make your decision, but make "your own" decision!

Would you like to know?

What makes your clients happy and what keeps them coming back?

What specials to run?

What type of customer service policies to have?

What services to offer?

To Answer All of These Questions We Only Need To Ask Ourselves ONE QUESTION:

WHAT DO WE LIKE?

And, by asking ourselves this ONE QUESTION "WHAT DO WE LIKE?"
We can make good sound business decisions, which we can feel happy and confident with.
Because...
We Are Just Like Our Clients...

This might sound too simple but most of the time, the simplest way is the
best way.
So... Build your business as if "you" are your client; and... what would "you" expect from your business?

What we like, our clients like, and what we don’t like, our clients don’t like; we naturally attract clients like ourselves; we will attract all the customers who have our same philosophy; just like the "Founders" of Nordstrom's and Wal-Mart.

For example: Nordstrom's Dept. Stores (High End) and Wal-Mart Stores (Low
End) - are 2 very successful businesses, with 2 very different business
philosophy's, and with 2 different types of clientele; but... where they are both the same, is they cater to their clients, who have the same likes and the same dislikes as these stores "Founders".

The great thing is, we are all different, so there are always plenty of clients
for EVERYONE; because we will attract clients who are like us, and clients who like the same things as we do.

And... what all successful people and businesses have in common is:
"Be the Best at What You Do!"

Don't try to do more, only Focus on what you are doing Right Here... Right Now...

To be Successful in anything, business, sports, career... depends on being able to stay "FOCUSED" on what is happening at the moment.

What if...
A Major League Pitcher in the middle of his 8th inning: lost his FOCUS, stopped pitching, got out his cell phone and started text messaging
Or...
A Neurosurgeon was in the middle of a surgery: and lost their FOCUS, stopped, got out a laptop computer and started twittering.
Or...
A CEO of a large company was in the middle of a presentation: and lost their FOCUS, stopped and went shopping for 2 hours.

If these Professionals could not "Focus" they would not be very successful.

But... it seems like the most difficult thing to do is to "Focus" on the work at hand; there are so many outside distractions it is easy to get off track.

However...
Being able to "FOCUS" is one of the single most important skills one can develop, to help themselves become more successful.
When one can stay "FOCUSED" on the project at hand, Right here, Right now, they will be able to do amazing things.

I have noticed that when people are struggling to do their job, it is "not" because they are not fully capable of doing a great job, it is usually because their mind is wandering, and they cannot stay completely "focused" on what they are doing.

When the mind is wandering: thinking about bills that need to be paid, problems, past mistakes, fear of not being able to do a good enough job, etc... It is almost impossible to stay "Focused".

I know, when I am "Focused" on what I am doing at the moment, and not letting myself get distracted, I am more Calm, Positive "and" Productive.

These are some of the Ways I Keep "FOCUSED" on my work at hand,
Right Here... Right Now...:
First of all, I try to Keep it Simple, and remember: Do Less Not More.

Develop the mind set that the computer and the cell phones are only tools.
Turn off the IM and email, and only turn them on when the project at hand, is finished.
Use paper and a pen.
Have a small daily task list: physically write the list, and check it off as each task is completed. (I like to do my tasks in between my daily goals; because tasks do not usually take a lot of brain work or creativity, they just need to get done).
Plan the night before, making sure the entire "next day" is planned out to the "T". (This helps "Focus" and keeps the day organized and productive, with less chance of getting off track).
Set small goals each day. (Work on "One" Goal at-a-Time, until completed).
Focus on doing "One" Thing Fabulous, each day, which you can be proud of.

And, "always" make time for Fun.

Step Back...
Have you ever felt like you were better at giving advice to others than to yourself...

When we give advice to others, especially those we care about, we are usually Positive, Affirming, Loving and Encouraging; but... we are also Firm and sure of ourselves, because we know the advice we are giving will help them.

I was reading a book about some very successful businesswomen who were writing advice letters to their younger selves.
It was fascinating what these women had to say to their younger selves, when they were 17 or 24 or even 35 years old; they were much gentler and firmer with themselves in their letters, than they "actually" were with themselves back then.

In the moment of the day, we can be so hard on ourselves, no wonder why we get apprehensive or doubtful.
If we were as hard on the people around us as we are on ourselves, we would probably not be very encouraging or fun to be around.

After reading the letters of advice these successful businesswomen wrote to their younger selves, I could see how this was the same type of advice we give our friends.

You are a lovable person
You are a caring person
You are very talented
You are beautiful (I see you through eyes of love)
You are smart
And...
Be patient; a hasty decision right now, can affect your whole life
Don't doubt yourself; go with your intuition
Don't be afraid; you can do it
You need to slow down and take better care of yourself
Don't give up; tomorrow is going to be a better day
Don't wear that dress!

So, why not give this same advice to ourselves right now; we can be a Best Friend to our own self, starting today, let's not wait 20 years...

I like to keep things simple; the simpler something is, the better chance it has of being a success.

Every time I am working on a new project, I ask myself these same 2 questions, and it helps me decide if it is a good idea.

Can I write the whole plan down on one piece of paper?

Can I get a guaranteed return on my money in less than 6 months?

If you CAN answer "YES" to these 2 questions, then the plan is not too complicated, and will be successful.

If you can't answer "yes" to these 2 questions, then the plan is probably too complicated; complicated plans usually do not work, because they become too time consuming and frustrating.

In my Salon I was always selling merchandise to make extra money. I liked earning this extra money to pay the rent, so all of the money I made from doing services was Profit.
Most of the merchandise I sold was on consignment, and my #1 seller that paid most of my rent, was the paintings and lithographs hanging on my walls. I had a local studio that would hang their pictures on consignment. This did two things, the pictures made my Salon look nice, and I would sell them right off the wall, so I was making money on every square inch of space.

Let’s say your plan is to expand your Salon and put in a boutique area.
Expanding your business and looking for more ways of making money is a GREAT IDEA; we just need to increase your profits without increasing your costs.

Plan 1 Option:
- I want to add-on more space for a Boutique, which will increase my rent and cost of doing business, so I will probably need to take out a loan, or borrow the money.

- I will do all of the purchasing and merchandising myself, but... I do not have fashion and retail experience so it will take me a while to learn how to do this.

- I have a full clientele, so I do not have a lot of extra time to run the boutique; I will probably have to hire someone to do it for me, which will raise my cost of doing business.
Now, I need to ask myself these 2 questions:

Can I write this whole plan down on one piece of paper?

Probably not; this plan is very complicated and it would most likely be too difficult to do yourself.

Can I get a good return on my money in less than 6 months?

Probably not; you would have a lot of time and money invested which could hurt your existing business.

Plan 2 Option:

- I want to utilize every square inch of the space in my Salon, and put in a boutique area without increasing my space or rent, so I can keep my costs down and not borrow any money.

- I will team up with a group of vendors; local artists, designers, and boutique owners, etc. who are already doing business in my area, and offer them space in my Salon, to sell their items on consignment.
This will increase these vendors exposure to 100's of women a month who visit my Salon; which will give them good advertisement and make them extra profit.

- These vendors will come by 1 to 2 times a week, to rotate inventory and merchandise their area, so it always looks appealing to my clients. Then my clients will want to purchase these boutique items when they come to my Salon.

These vendors will start out by paying me a % of everything I sell the 1st month; then after the first month, they will pay me a small flat rent for the space and a % of everything I sell.

- I need to make a 30% to 50% profit on everything I sell; this way I can do incentives for my staff to promote the boutique items to their clients.

Again, I need to ask these 2 questions:

Can I write this whole plan down on one piece of paper?

Yes, this plan is not complicated.

Can I get a guaranteed return on my money in less than 6 months?

Yes, you have little to no money invested and you should start showing a profit immediately.

Always keep your creative juices flowing, and always keep your mind and eyes open for opportunities, this is part of the fun of doing business.
Remember the simpler something is, the better chance it has of being a success.

Sometimes we have to start Slow...

This can be challenging, in the fast instant world we are in.

We have instant messaging, fast food, cell phones, credit cards, etc...
We are not used to waiting.

So, when we hear "have patience, start small, start at the bottom, and work your way up" – It could seem scary.

But… now more than ever, in this New Economy, starting at the bottom and working your way up, is very important; and although this way takes longer, it is more solid. The hands-on experience will develop management skills, increase job talents, improve people skills, work ethics, problem solving and learning from others around you. These are all the things that are crucial to advancing your career.

I prefer to start at the bottom, and work my way up. This is exactly how I learned how to run a business. I started out working in a Salon as a Nail Technician; and then became a Salon Owner, and then a Product Manufacturer.
I have done every aspect of my business, training, shipping, filling, selling, product development etc… And, by learning all aspects of a business, you will know the in's and out’s of the whole business; so when you are in a management position, or you open your own business, you will be ready to build that business and make it successful."

Whenever someone asks me if they should open their own business, I say, "Yes", always. However… you need experience first; you need at least 2 years hands-on experience, in the type of business you want to open.

If you want to open your own Salon, then you need to work in a Salon; and build your clientele from scratch.
Once you can learn how to build a clientele from scratch, and how to work in a Salon environment, observing for 2 years, what you like and what you don’t like, you will have a good grasp on how a Salon should be run.
When you have the experience of how to build a clientele, and the experience to train others how to build a clientele, you will have a successful Salon.

The "key" is learning how to build a full clientele from scratch; when you can do this, you have the #1 Skill it will take to open your own business.

How to Renovate Your Business
When you have Champagne taste on a Beer budget...

How can I get the most amount of impact for the least amount of money?!
This is a question I get asked a lot.
I like to keep things simple and economical. Rejuvenating your Salon, is just like getting your house ready for an Open House. (PS: You can go to HGTV .com and get some really great ideas.)

I love watching the home shows, like "Design on a dime" or "Curb Appeal"; it
is amazing how much they can do on so little.

This is exactly the same thing we are going to do: We are going to Renovate
your Business for under $1,000. (Make sure to recruit all your friends and their husbands; you will want all the extra elbow grease you can round up.)

Whenever I am watching the Home "make-over" shows, there are certain things which they all do; this will be where we are going to start:

#1 - THROW IT OUT! GET RID OF IT! NO CLUTTER!
Only keep the necessities.
This is going to be the most painful; you might end up throwing out half of everything you have in your Salon. (You should probably get prepared, and rent one of those big trash bins for the weekend).

#2 - CLEAN
CLEAN EVERYTHING from top to bottom, and set out aromatherapy oils or candles, so your Salon smells like a spa.
Clients will feel more relaxed and happier, when your Salon is clean and smells wonderful.

#3 - RE-ARRANGE EVERYTHING, so your Salon will look more spacious, and you will have more room for a sitting area, and a refreshment area.

#4 - PAINT the entire inside of the Salon, and the "front door".
When clients walk up to the front of your Salon, it needs to feel like you are saying, "WELCOME". And, remember the front door, and your entrance area, is your "first" impression.

#5 - FIX EVERYTHING that is broken, chipped or torn.
After beautifying and cleaning your Salon, you will want to make sure there are no broken hinges on your display cabinet, or any stained chair cushions in the sitting area, etc...

You are going to be so AMAZED at the IMPACT you can make on your Business in just a couple of weekends for UNDER $1,000, you won't want to stop; it is like a domino effect; you will want to keep doing more and more.

And... The Positive Affect all this will make on your clients, and your co-workers is Priceless.

Last weekend, the World Wide Tammy Taylor Nail Team and myself, did the Orlando Premiere Show, and I would love to share with you, some of the exciting things that happened.

At the Tammy Taylor Nail Party Class, and at the Tammy Taylor Demonstration Booths, we gave Away $1,000's of dollars in Tammy Taylor Products, Prizes and Cash!!!!!!!!!!
And… One of our Lucky Class Attendees, "Michelle Radich", WON a YEAR SUPPLY, of Tammy Taylor Nail Products!!!!

At the Tammy Taylor Nail Class on Sunday, I taught about "Reinventing Your Business", to a room full of very enthusiastic, Professional Salon Owners, Nail Technicians, Instructors, Students and Cosmetologists.

The Tammy Taylor Nail Team came from all over the World:
Italy, Japan, Spain, Bonaire, Trinidad, Bahamas, Florida, California, Alabama, Indiana, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina and Mississippi.

We had the "World of Nails" going on at our booth.
You would start at one side of our booth with demonstrations. From the USA NAIL SQUAD, and the Trinidad and Bahamas Tammy Taylor Nail Team: demonstrating our Famous Pink & White Sculptured Nails, and our Fabulous Tammy Taylor Soak-Off Gel System. Then, move onto the Tammy Taylor International Nail Team, that came in from Italy, Spain, Japan and Bonaire; to teach the "Newest" cutting edge Nail Art Techniques; using all the Tammy Taylor Prizma (Color Acrylic's) and the New Tammy Taylor Nail Colour (Polish).
Some of the exciting New Techniques were: Stiletto Nails, Edge Nails, 3DNails, Corkscrew Nails & Inlays. You name it, these girls could do it, and using only their Tammy Taylor Nail Art Brushes and Tammy Taylor Nail Products.

Our clients never had to leave our booth it was a continuous day of Nail Education.

The World Wide Tammy Taylor Nail Team is an AMAZING group of Nail Technicians and Professionals who have extreme PASSION for NAILS. This was one of the proudest moments in my life, being surrounded by this Team of Passionate, Dedicated, Loyal and Professional people, truly the "Best of the Best".

These AMAZING Nail Technicians worked at their Salons all week; finishing their last clients just before rushing to the airport to catch their flight to Orlando; then training with me all day Saturday; working all day Sunday and again all day Monday, at our Tammy Taylor Nail Booth, doing demonstrations and educating customers about nails.

Then back on the plane, to get to their Salon in time to start their 12 hour day of nail clients!!!

WOW!!! Now, that is PASSION for Nails!!!!!

You are the STAR!

Sometimes we don't realize how really important we are to our clients, because we look at our Profession as a job.
But...
The Beauty Business is "not" a Job: it is an extension of ourselves, our Talents and our Creativity.
Your clients come to your Salon to see You and Only You!
Your clients could go somewhere else but they don't because they only want You!
Every time a client books an appointment with You, they are choosing You.
No one can force a client to go to someone they don't like, because the client is paying for the service and they can choose any Salon in town.

Now... When you think of it like that, you will start realizing: Your Clients LOVE YOU, this is why they keep coming back to You!
Sometimes when the everyday repetition or the problems every Salon has like: No-Shows, last minute cancellations, clients running late, etc., start piling up (and the crazy thing is this all seems to happen on the same day or all in the same week) and the frustration level gets high, this is when we "can" forget that our Clients LOVE US.

And, I remember in my Salon, at times like this, it can get tough and frustrating; but... this is when you really need to realize your clients love you, so you don't lose your patience or start thinking that another line of work would be easier.

Being in the Beauty Business takes a Special type of People-Person and this Special type of Person is YOU!
The Beauty Business is in your blood, it satisfies your creative side along with your people loving side.

And... The main thing to remember is "Your Clients Choose You" and "Your Clients come to You because they LOVE YOU!"

Do you believe Summer is already here!
And... This year we need to ENJOY every minute of it!

I know Summer is supposed to be a time to relax a little more; the kids are out of school, maybe taking a little family vacation.
However, I remember in my Salon when Summer would come, all of our schedules and our client’s schedules would get so chaotic it didn’t feel like the “Fun Days of Summer”.

I think Summertime is busier and more hectic because we are trying to figure out how to juggle all of our children's activities, and take care of our clients.
And…our clients are trying to figure out the same thing, and get their nails done.

But…
One of the fringe benefits of being in the Beauty and Nail Business is: it gives us a lot more flexibility to organize our work schedule around our family schedule.

However, it still takes a lot of Organization to juggle both.
So, how are we going to give ourselves more FREE TIME, just to RELAX this Summer, with our families and still take care of our clients? Through... "Organization".

The #1 thing to do first is to figure out your Summer work schedule; this will make everything less hectic for you.

We still need to get in our 40 hours at the Salon: Instead of trying to fit all of your clients into 3 or 4 days, spread your days out to 5 or 6 days, just not as many hours each day; this gives you more flexibility.

Usually our children's activities are during the day so the afternoons and evenings would be a good schedule at the Salon; and, maybe a couple of days at the Salon with an earlier morning schedule.

Many of your clients are standing appointments, who have a set schedule which you cannot change; so they will be our starting point; we will "Organize" around them first.

Get out your work schedule for the next 3 months, and write it all down on a month at a glance calendar for June July and August

Let's say 1 week looks like this:

Monday
OFF

Tuesday

9:00 standing

10:00 standing

11:00 standing

12:00 standing

1:00 on is OPEN

Tuesday will be your early schedule 7:00 am to 3:00 pm = 8 hours
Leaving your entire afternoon OPEN

Wednesday

4:00 standing

5:00 standing

6:00 standing

7:00 standing

Wednesday will be your late afternoon/evening schedule 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm = 7hours
This leaves your whole morning OPEN

Thursday
Scattered openings

10:00 standing

11:00 OPEN

12:00 standing

1:00 OPEN

2:00 OPEN

3:00 OPEN

4:00 standing

6:00 standing

Thursday will be your one long day 9:00 am to 9:00 pm = 12 hours
This is your $$ DAY

Friday

9:00 standing

10:00 OPEN

11:00 standing

1:00 standing

Friday will be your early day 9:00 am to 3:00 pm = 6 hours
This leaves your afternoon OPEN

Now... Saturday or Sunday could be your one extra day to help pick up some of the hours you might have cut out during your week.

Monday would also be good except again there are probably more children's activities going on Monday verses Saturday or Sunday.

Now, that we got ourselves "Organized" we are ready for our "Summertime Nail Parties" and ENJOYING our Summer with our families!

Kiss the Frog....

There is a philosophy which is becoming very popular in Business Journals and Business Articles lately; called "EAT THE FROG".

It goes like this; if we have something we don’t want to do, then this is the first thing we do, before we get our day started.

It is like "EATING A FROG".

So, if we "EAT THE FROG FIRST" everything else this day will be easier and more enjoyable.

Now, I do like this philosophy, because I know getting something done first; which we don't want to do, will definitely help us not to procrastinate and it will make our day lighter and more productive:
However...

Thinking about "EATING A FROG" would not make me want to do something; it would make me dread it even more.

So... if I had something I really didn't want to do "I Would Embrace It and Give It a Great Big KISS"!
I would rather "TURN MY FROG INTO A PRINCE or CHOCOLATE"; this sounds like more fun, and makes me want to do it more, instead of dreading it.

And, this would definitely get me in the mood, "not" to procrastinate; I would look forward to getting it done at the beginning of my day.

Sometimes it is just how we think about things, the finished results might turn out the same, but we can sure make it a lot more FUN while we are doing it!

Fall in Love All Over Again!

How do we fall in love with our clients all over again...

It is so exciting to get a New Customer, building a brand new relationship is always energizing and we try to impress them by acting on our best behavior and catering to their needs; we are selling them on how wonderful we are, so they will want to keep coming back.
However... What happens after they have been our customer for a while and we know everything about them and they know everything about us; we both get bored and in a rut...

When I was in my Salon doing nails I felt like I was having a Nail Party everyday and everyone was coming to my Salon to be at my party. I liked to have a fun atmosphere; where every client who came in I knew their name and they felt comfortable and relaxed. (Of course I knew all of my client’s names but I liked knowing every clients name, since they were joining my Nail Party!)

I had many clients who had met and become friends while getting their nails done and would schedule their appointments back to back with each other, so they could sit there and talk, and they always looked forward to their Nail appointment.
I loved feeling like my Salon was a Nail Party; this is one of the main reasons I was always excited about doing nails and going to work.

I think in the last few years the personal touch has been lost in many Salons and businesses; with the computer age people are looking for the personal touch more than ever and they will gravitate towards the Beauty Professionals and Businesses who build their business around personal customer relations.

A Salon is a social club in many ways; it is all about relaxing, feeling free to talk about everything and enjoying girl time in a fun environment. (Just make sure you know who is in the next chair over LOL) I personally like smaller Salons with a lot of people working, it is more exciting for everyone working there and it is fun for the clients.

Have you ever noticed when you are getting ready for a party it just gets you in a GREAT MOOD; this is the Same Way to Get Yourself in the Mood for Your Clients and Your Nail Party each Day.
Get your Salon or Station ready, just like getting your house ready for a party:

Turn on the Music
Clean, Clean, Clean (especially the bathrooms and the floors)
Get Dressed up and Ready for your Guests
Set out little Refreshments
Set Up Seating so it is Easy for Everyone to talk to Each Other

Having fun with our clients and enjoying going to work, is the First step to falling back in love.
And, it only takes a smile on our face, a more care free fun outlook about our job and building relationships with our customers, to change everything!

How to compete with discount Salons......

The other day I was talking to a couple of my girlfriends and we were talking about the discount Salons, and how they are not that much of a discount anymore, since they charge extra for every little thing you have done; most of the time you spend just as much as a regular Salon.

So, why does anyone continue to go to these discount Salons since the price is not that much different?

In the Salon business there has been many discount Salons come on the scene in the last 20 years; but... even these discount Salons are not cheap anymore. Their pricing now is usually within 20% of regular Salon pricing.

So, why are they still busy if their prices have gone up and their quality of service and products are only mediocre?

I was very curious, so I started asking some women and teenage girls why they would go to a discount Salon, even though their prices are not as cheap as they use to be.

These were the majority of the responses I received:

"I started going to the discount Salons because they were cheap, but now I keep going because they are CONVENIENT."

"Even when the prices started going up and the services did not improve, I stayed because I love the CONVENIENCE."

"I like to just walk-in on a Saturday afternoon and get an appointment; this is CONVENIENT and relaxing for me".

Now, this was not the response I wanted to hear, because this is a really tough one to compete with: "CONVENIENCE".

We have been so use to our clients booking standing appointments during certain days, certain hours and 2 years in advance, it is very difficult and it feels strange to start changing our mindset about taking walk-ins, or working on day's we do not have all of our appointments Pre-scheduled.

However, this is really the PERFECT TIME to make these changes, because in this New Economy clients do not mind spending a little more as they are looking for more QUALITY and VALUE for their money.

And, since these discount Salons have raised their prices without improving their Quality of Services or products, the client is no longer getting a deal; the only thing the discount Salons have going for them now is "CONVENIENCE".

How to stay professional and competitive while making cutbacks....

A good friend and client of mine for many, many years had to make some changes in her business, to adapt to the New Economy. She called me earlier this week, and we were talking about how to stay professional and competitive while making cutbacks.
One of her questions I wanted to share with all of you, was the question below about "The Phone: The First Impression" Blog.

QUESTION:
Tammy, I no longer have a receptionist so I am using my personal cell phone as my business phone, how do I do this and still present myself as being professional?

I will not have a physical person answering the phone anymore while I am with a client, how do I make my voicemail sound personable and professional, so my existing clients and new clients do not get annoyed, feeling like they are not getting the personal attention I could give, when I had a receptionist?

ANSWER:
Clients will understand the changes you are making if it does not hamper your customer service, and your clients continue to feel they are just as important and appreciated as ever.

The most professional way to use your cell phone as your business and personal phone is to put your business first; friends will understand, however clients will not feel confident, if you answer your cell as if it is your personal home phone.

A nice feature on cell phones is they can be programmed with different ring tones for family, friends, clients, etc. So you can screen your calls without having to answer the phone, and when you do answer, you will know if it is business or personal.

Make sure your Voicemail is very professional and reassuring as this will now be your New receptionist.

The most important thing to remember when doing a voice message is reassuring your clients their phone call will be returned within a certain time frame; this will give them confidence to leave a message, instead of getting frustrated and just hanging up.

Here is an example of a simple professional voice message which will encourage clients to leave a message:

"Hello this is Tammy Taylor with Tammy Taylor Nails, I am presently with a client, please leave your name and phone number and I will call you back within an hour. If this is urgent please text me, and if you would like more information please visit my website TammyTaylorNails.com, thank you for calling, please leave a message after the beep."

After every client, listen to your voice messages immediately (do not procrastinate), and write the message down on a note pad (instead of trying to remember): then call back your clients immediately, before your next client.

When clients know you will call them back promptly, they will be very perceptive, and will adapt to the new routine quickly and effortlessly.

The Little Things Make Us More Successful....

Many times we think it is the big stuff that makes the biggest difference in our business, however, this is usually not the case; it is usually all the little stuff added together which ends up being bigger than the big stuff!

There is a saying "don't sweat the small stuff"; which I do not agree with; I feel if you sweat the small stuff, then it does not become the big stuff. Also, customers notice the small stuff more than they notice the big stuff.

Why do I like to do business with some people, more-so than others?

If we really think about this question intensely, we can answer our own question about: How can we make ourselves the "ones", whom others want to do business with, more than they want to do business with someone else!

They are GENUINELY NICE. They never make me feel like I am asking a silly question or inconveniencing them.

They ALWAYS REMEMBER MY NAME. Even if I haven't needed their products or services for awhile, they make me feel like a long lost friend.

They ALWAYS REMEMBER SOMETHING I TOLD THEM and they ask me about it.

They ALWAYS TELL ME THE TRUTH, even if it is not the answer I wanted to hear, it is an honest answer.

They ALWAYS DO WHAT THEY SAY and if they can't, they let me know right away, even at the risk I might be upset, they tell me anyhow.

They ALWAYS GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE than I expect. The Quality of their Products and/or the Quality of their Service is always just a little better than anyone else.

The Phone: The First Impression $

This might seem too simple to be important, but it could be the difference between getting a New Potential Customer or "not" getting a New Potential Customer.

Have you ever over-heard someone talking on their cell phone too loud, or rudely, and it makes you cringe?
With so many people using their cell phones as both their business and personal phone, it is very easy to come across as being un-professional.

We seem to have gotten very casual when we answer our phones; but... this could be the first impression we make with a New Potential Customer, especially if it is a cell phone, we use for business and personal.

Remember: When customers perceive a person or business as being professional, they will trust them more, and be willing to pay more for their services and products.

However, I do like the idea of having cell phone numbers of people whom I do business with; because I know, I can get hold of them when I need them, either by calling or by texting.
So, giving your clients your cell # is very convenient, but... you still need to keep it professional.

New customers do not want to deal with an answering machine, especially if they have a problem or a question.
When someone calls a place of business, they expect the person who answers the phone to be Cheerful, Professional and Knowledgeable.

I know, I have called businesses when I have been looking for a service or product I needed; and those businesses which did not have a person answering the phone and sent my call directly to a voice mail, I did not do business with them, as I did not feel confidant. And, I am sure there are many potential customers just like me.

A little note on customer relations: When you are in your Salon or your place of business, you should not be taking personal phone calls while you are with a customer.
You need to give 100% of your attention to your customer with no distractions, as the customer is paying for your time along with the service or product you are providing.

Here are some very simple "Phone Etiquette Tips" which will help you make a fantastic, professional, first impression:

Have a smile on your face when you answer the telephone - Your smile shows in your voice, and projects a friendly ready to help attitude.

Answer the telephone by the second or third ring - Most customers find it annoying, waiting for someone to answer their call. In fact, this might cost you a paying customer.

The best way to answer your cell phone, when using it for personal and for business, is to answer with a greeting and your name, for example:
"Hello, this is Tammy"
Or...
"Hello, Tammy Speaking"

The best way to answer your cell phone, when using it only for business, is answer with a greeting, the name of your business, your name and a courtesy, for example:
"Hello, Tammy Taylor Nails, Tammy speaking, how may I help you?"

Always focus on the call- Try "not" to get distracted by people around you. If someone tries to interrupt you while you are on a call, politely remind them you are on a customer call, and you will be with them as soon as you are finished.

Don’t Talk Loudly - Keep your voice down and do not discuss sensitive matters.

Turn the ringer volume down or use the vibrate mode.

Keep personal phone calls short and few - Customers will get irritated when you are taking personal phone calls.

Do not use slang words or Poor Language.

At the end of the conversation, don't just hang up. End the call with a warm "Thank you for your call."

Many times, it is the simplest things, which can make our businesses more profitable or less profitable. And, I assure you, your New Customers and Your Existing Customers will really appreciate your phone etiquette, and it will make a big difference in your business.

What endless possibilities!

I would like to share with you a little bit about my history and how pursuing a Dream is more important than: having experience, or enough start up money. And, how it is possible, to make your Dreams come true.

Why not Dream BIG? Reach for the stars, and then at the least, you will get the moon!
In 1981, when I was 18 years old, I started my first Salon with only $400.00.
I had really BIG DREAMS. Much bigger DREAMS than a $400.00 budget would justify. But... I never looked at what I couldn't do; I always looked at what I COULD DO.

Can I be Content in My Job?

Yes, you can be content in your job, if being content means being happy in your work.

But... Do people just want to be happy in their work? This is where it gets complicated; what defines happy?

Is "Happy":

More Money?

A More Prestigious Position?

A More Prestigious Job?

An Easier Job?

Etc...

Or, are these the same things that cause us discontent with our job?

When we are happy (content) where we are, we have a more positive attitude, and our outlook on everything in our job is more positive; our head is up and we are open for opportunity, and we do not pass up the good things that come by. People may say "you always get lucky"; yes, maybe you do, but you make your own luck, because you are always "ready to get lucky" and you don't pass up "Opportunities".

When we are unhappy with our job we get negative; our head is down and our minds are closed, and when opportunity comes by, we don’t see it.

We all have many opportunities throughout our lives; but the key is: knowing when these opportunities are in front of us.
And, by staying Positive; ready to take on challenges, and enjoying the adventure, these "Opportunities" will not pass us by.

The one thing that I think has happened in this New Economy is people are getting more discouraged, and quit easier.
But... The problem with getting discouraged and quitting is nothing good comes from it.
Let's say you are working harder and more hours, but your money is not going as far, and you are on a tighter budget than before.

You might be carpooling to work

Clipping coupons

Getting rid of recreational vehicles

Or cutting out vacations

Etc...

It is easy to say, "I don't want to keep working this hard, if I can't make more money"!

But... When people get discouraged and negative and just throw up their hands, they can start making bad business decisions.
Like:

I need a different job

I need to move somewhere cheaper

I need to move somewhere with more job opportunities

I am not saying these are bad business decisions, but most of the time, if these decisions are made because someone is "Discouraged", it doesn't work out.
Verses:
If these decisions are made for Positive reasons; a great job opportunity arises in another area, which also happens to have a lower cost of living index; this is "Opportunity" and a "Lucky Break".

But... Most of the time, it is better to stay where you are and make your job you have right now, your "Opportunity" and your "Lucky Break".

Just keep moving forward each day; even on the difficult days; know tomorrow, things will always get better.

And, most of the time, we quit just an inch from the finish line; and if we only knew how close we were, we never would have quit and given up.

With any economy, the Pendulum always comes back the other way.
So, right now, make the budget adjustments, work the longer days, and stay positive, knowing this is only temporary, this is not forever; this is only until the Pendulum comes back our way.

And, in every type of economy, even in our New Economy, there are "Opportunities" and "Lucky Breaks"!
We just need to keep our Positive Attitude, so we will have our heads up and our minds open, to see the opportunities when they are in front of us.

Do People Gravitate Towards You, Or Away From You?

You want to "open" your own business

The same philosophy prevails; "Be The Leader You Would Want To Follow"

Highly successful business people and managers are not more talented or smarter than other people, but, they like people and they know they need people around them, in order to be successful; whether it is clients, employees or co-workers, etc...

Successful people have developed Traits that automatically attract others; people like to be around them.

Many times successful business people have become managers and owners without even thinking about it; it just happens.

People will just gravitate towards them, and ask if they can work for them; or they get promoted because they are good managers of people, and people like to follow their direction.

What are the "Traits" these Leaders have (that we can all have), that draws others towards them?

The "Never Give Up" Attitude (They Keep Trying, there is always a way and anything is possible)

Have a Dream for the future and Keep moving forward, towards this Dream (They Share their Dreams with those around them and let them be part of it)

Stay Focused on Today (They Keep everyone Working towards the Dream, "One day at-a-Time" and they see it become a reality)

Open Minded (They are Always ready to think outside the box, and listen to other people's ideas)

Stay Positive (Especially in the Middle of Storms, this is when the people around them need them the most)

Treat People with Respect (They treat everyone with respect, co-workers, the janitors, the salespeople, the bank tellers, etc...)

Develop the Talents of Others (They figure out what the people around them are good at, and they develop these talents and skills)

Now, I just want to share with you a few traits to be aware of that push people away, and make it very difficult to become successful:

Being, defensive, jealous, spoiled, judgmental, closed Minded or impatient.

(And, if you see that you have any of these traits, start working on replacing them with good leadership Traits, and you will be amazed at the way people will respond to you.)

A friend of mine has her own Salon, which had been struggling for the last few years.
She would get 2-3 months behind on her rent, and then get caught up again, just before the landlord started getting upset.
She was playing catch up every month and never got ahead.

This all started about 6 years ago when she started making Compromises:

Compromises in her Strong Work Ethics; she went from putting a solid 40 to 50 hours a week into her business to about 30 mediocre hours a week;

Compromise in her Quality of Customer Service; it was difficult to get an appointment, and a nail repair in between fill-ins was out of the question;

Compromise in her Careful Money Management; she was taking the money that needed to be put back into her business and spending it on personal; Her Salon started getting run down, and she got behind on her rent.

These Compromises are what started the erosion in the Foundation of her business.

As her business continued to erode, she became very discouraged, and every month when the bills came due, she seriously thought about just closing the doors and quitting.

The stress, the discouragement, the economy, everything was just taking all of her energy; she didn’t even feel like going to work. She felt like things were out of her control, and there was no hope of her Salon ever being the success it once was
(This is a horrible way to live; it takes all of the joy out of going to work, and it makes it difficult to get motivated to do anything. It feels like your business is doomed, so why spend any more energy, time or money, when you are just barely hanging on.)

When she came to me and asked for advice, what I had to say was not what she wanted to hear; MORE Energy, MORE Promotion, MORE Love, and MORE Work etc...

Until one Monday, she went into her Salon when she knew no one would be there, and she sat down in the middle of the floor and cried.
She was at a turning point: Does she QUIT? Or Does she STAY and FIGHT?

Well, she decided to STAY and FIGHT!
That day she made the commitment to LOVE her Business.

She committed to herself; I will do what it takes to turn my business around.
And, since then, she not only has turned her business around, but she is even more successful than she ever has been.
She has expanded once already and is planning on expanding even more!

Business is not Built in a Day nor Does a Business Crumble in a Day

A business crumbles from internal erosion over a period of time.

Erosion of a business usually starts with a compromise, like: taking the path of least resistance or the path that seems faster and easier.

In this New Economy, it takes more energy to make money than it did before. At times like this, it could seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel; which makes it easier for businesses to justify compromise, which starts the internal erosion.

One compromise can lead to another, and each time a compromise is made in a business, it gets easier to compromise the next time.

The first signs of erosion in a business are:
A Compromise in Business Ethics

A Compromise in Customer Service
A Compromise in the Quality of Products and Services
A Compromise in Money Management.

Each of these are the foundation of a business. Once the foundation is compromised in any way, the business will start eroding.

But, even if a business has started eroding, IT IS NEVER TOO LATE; the erosion can be stopped today!

A Business needs to Start RE-Building with what they have, and where they are, right now.

If you need to RE-Build your Business, the good thing is, you will not be RE-building from scratch; you already have an established Business base, and you have Experience; this is much, much, much more, than you had when you first started.

The very 1st Hour of Our Day Determines the Next 23 Hours

The first hour of our day can set our attitude for the entire day; so for breakfast we can either feed the bad attitude or we can feed our positive attitude; whichever attitude we feed, will grow the entire day.

We need to make our CHOICE in the first hour of the day to stay positive; when the first hour in the morning goes good we can usually handle the rest of the day, but when the first hour starts out bad, it can create a bad attitude for the entire day.

Usually the only things that come from a bad attitude are things we say or do that we wish we could take back.

Make a List of your 5 Positive Actions and Thoughts, and let this be your Morning Routine….

I like to have a Morning Routine, this helps me start my day off Positive, and it keeps things more calm; especially with my children, I like to be double calm.

However I do find when I don't do my 5 Positive Actions and Thoughts first, this gets me off my Morning Routine and I get a little more impatient, and irritated throughout the day, which affects my Positive attitude.

This is my Morning Routine; I have written down my 5 Positive Actions and Thoughts I do to start my day:

Listening to music

Reading my Bible

But, some days are more challenging than others; so if I start getting impatient and irritated in the middle of the day, I go back to my 5 Positive Actions and Thoughts, and I start my day over again from this NEW Starting Point.

NEW Start:
This NEW Starting Point will now be My NEW First Hour for the Rest of My Day; sometimes I need to Re-Start my day 3-4 times throughout the day, and sometimes I only need my ONE good Start first thing in the morning.

Where is my Profit Going?!

If you are wondering where your Profit is going, it is most likely being EATEN UP by the Bottom 20% of your Business.
These are the Products and/or Services that are "Not" Making you enough money.

Why do you need to DISCONTINUE or EVALUATE existing Products and/or Services that "do not" produce enough Profit?

If you keep the Bottom 20%, which are the “Low to No Profit" Products and/or Services, they will eat away at your Business and Profits slowly. The “Low to No Profit" Products and/or Services only seem like they are helping you hit your bottom line every month, but... the bottom line would be more profitable and easier to hit if you spend more Energy, Time and Money on your 80% Top Money Makers.

It will take a commitment from you to evaluate and make the changes you need to make to your Bottom Line, because the things we like the most are the hardest to give up and they are not usually our Top 80% Money Makers, because the bottom 20% are usually more of the Fun Services to do, or the exciting Impulse Products, but these are the things that eat up our Bottom Line Profit.

SIMPLIFY then EXPAND

Especially if you plan to Add "New" or Expand, you will need to SIMPLIFY your existing Product lines and/or Services; if you only Add New Products and/or Services without weeding out the bottom 20%, which are the “Low to No Profit" Products and/or Services, you will be Overstocked, Overwhelmed, Over-worked and NOT Making a Profit

Keep your business simple; you will have More Energy, More Profit and you will have More Control.

Q: What Products and/or Services should I Focus on the most?
A: Evaluate where you are making the most Profit, and Focus on these Products and/or Services first and foremost.

Now let's find out where your business makes the most Profit

Example:
All of your Services Equal $4,000.00 a month
Service A makes $ 2,000.00 month
Service B makes $ 1,200.00 month
Service C makes $ 650.00 month
Service D makes $ 150.00 month

KEEP Services A and B
EVALUATE Service C
DISCONTINUE Service D

Another Example:
Your Product Sales Equal $4,000.00 a month

Product A makes $ 2,000.00 month
Product B makes $ 1,200.00 month
Product C makes $ 650.00 month
Product D makes $ 150.00 month

KEEP Products A and B
EVALUATE Product C
DISCONTINUE Product D

Keep your 80% Top Money Makers; Do Not Make Any Changes.
Evaluate your Bottom 20% Low to No Money makers and Make your Changes.

Expand your existing 80% Money Makers
Reinvent your Low 20% Products and/or Services to make them more appealing
Drop Off the Bottom 20% Products and/or Services One at a Time, and then replace them, One at a Time with NEW Products and/or Services

Always Have Fun with your Business, but also be committed to the changes you need to make, to help your business become more successful and more profitable.

Make More Money, and with Less Stress, even in the New Economy

Yes, it is possible to improve your business, and make more money in this New Economy, but the most important thing it is going to take, is the Commitment from you “TO DO IT”.

Do not worry whether you have what it takes, because "YOU DO"; you just need to take the first step and commit yourself to it.

First, let’s start with reducing Stress and Tiredness:

#1 Distractions
Is your workday focused on making money? Or, is your workday full of distractions?

The way to keep your work day focused is by asking yourself throughout the day, "Is this making my business money or promoting for future money?; then this is Business, and I will keep doing it"; and if "not" advancing my Business, then it is Personal.

You might be giving 100% of your energy to your business without distractions but, let's do a little test:
Tomorrow, designate 8 hours just for your business; then for the entire day write down everything you do.
Especially write down anything you do which is personal:

A personal phone call

A personal errand

A personal conversation with a co worker

A personal email

Etc...

Also, make sure you write down the time you started doing anything personal, and the time you ended.

This is not to make you feel bad because you have to take care of personal business; we all have personal lives, and important things that need to get done; we just need to "separate" business from personal, to create less stress.

Sometimes we think we are working more hours than we are; because our work hours are combined with distractions; like taking care of personal business, and talking to co-workers.

25% of the work day is taken up with personal distractions...

Now, let's say you have done the 8 hour work day analysis, and you had 6 hours of actual time solely committed to your business; this means 2 hours or 25% of your work day is taken up with personal distractions.

This might not seem like a lot, but when this really makes a huge difference is when;
let's say you are at work from 9:00am to 7:00pm, and you feel like you are working 10 hours a day; but you are not making enough money for the hours you are working; causing you excess STRESS, and making you really TIRED and wore out.

25% or 2 1/2 hours of your work day, is taken up with personal distractions, so you are only working 7 1/2 hours (but it FEELS like 10)

It would be better to schedule yourself 11:00 to 7:00 or 7:00 to 3:00, with only 8 hours of work with NO DISTRACTIONS.

Then you "WILL NOT" FEEL STRESSED OUT and TIRED; you will also stay more focused, which means higher production.
8 hours of productive work, is always better than 10 hours with non-productive work.

Separate business from personal, and you will have less stress, more energy, and you will get more done.

#2 Education

Education will make you better and faster at what you do; which means you will make more money with less stress.
And, you will stay excited about what you are doing.

Focus on one thing you could do to help you with your job, something you know that could make you better and faster, so you could be more productive.
Example:
Learn how to do Pink & White Backfills in under 1 hour
Learn how to use a computer program to keep track of your client information, for fast easy reference; this is especially efficient when confirming appts., doing special promotions, Birthday cards, etc...
Learn how to do a new service your clients would like, or would help you bring in new clients
Remember; every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.

Once you have targeted the one thing you want to improve on, then you need to get all of the Education you can possibly get on that one thing; then learn everything about it, and practice until you have it down.

Hands-on Classes are always the best.
I suggest taking at least 2 hands-on Classes a year.

Take advantage of all the Free or low cost Education available today, especially with the internet, where you have endless education at your fingertips.

When you can do something better and faster, you will make more money (and have more FUN doing it).

#3 ORGANIZATION
Organization will make your job more productive, which means less hours at work; you will still be making money, but with less stress.

Make your list at the beginning of each day, and check it off as you get it done.

Last week I shared with you my "Procrastination Styles"; this week I have been asking other people what their "Procrastination Styles" are; and there were actually 3 more "Procrastination Styles" that were very prominent; so I wanted to share with you some more ideas that might help you or someone you know.

Procrastination can really affect ones' business, and with the New Economy, we have to be on the top of our game at all times; and if we let procrastination sabotage us, then it will be even more difficult to thrive in this New Economy.

Here are the 3 prominent "Procrastination Styles" people have shared with me:

"Procrastination Style" 1: Procrastinating things they do not like to do, such as:

Getting to work early
Getting New Clients by Passing out business cards, Cold-calling and Asking for referrals
Cleaning and organizing work area
Ordering nail supplies every week

A good way they made this "Procrastination Style" work for them is they REWARD themselves every time they accomplish something they do not like to do.
Here are some ideas:
- After Getting to work early all week
REWARD Yourself by leaving early on Friday, or by treating yourself to a nice lunch at your favorite restaurant.
- After Getting New Clients
REWARD Yourself by treating yourself to a massage at your favorite spa, every time you have picked up 7 new clients.
- After Cleaning and organizing your work area
REWARD Yourself by treating yourself to a 30 minute coffee break at Starbucks, and read a fun magazine or book.
- Ordering nail supplies every week
REWARD Yourself with less stress and by taking advantage of the weekly specials; you will make more profit, so you have extra money to treat yourself to a little present.

"Procrastination Style" 2: Procrastinating getting organized.

A good way they made this "Procrastination Style" work for them is by not complicating the thought or action of getting organized, "Keep it simple".
Here are some ideas:
Key Thought: "Do not organize for tomorrow, only organize for today".
Write down your top-5 things that you have to get done today, and that is what you do. Anything else will have to wait until it makes it to your top-5 list.
Your REWARD; you will not only get organized, you will start enjoying it.

"Procrastination Style" 3: Procrastinating making decisions. This

"Procrastination Style" can come from fear of making a wrong decision.
A good way they made this "Procrastination Style" work for them is by getting over the fear of decisions.

For one whole day, make a decision on every single choice or question that you come across; and at the end of that day, go over every decision you made.
Your REWARD; your confidence will build every time you make a good decision "Priceless".

Know Your "Procrastination Style"
And, Make It Work For You...

Has Procrastination ever caused you Physical or Emotional Stress or cost you Financially?

There are many reports about Procrastination causing Health Problems; here is a report from a Professor at a University:

"Just over the course of a single academic term, procrastinating college students had such evidence of compromised immune systems as more colds and flu, more gastrointestinal problems. And they had insomnia. In addition, procrastination has a high cost to others as well as oneself; it shifts the burden of responsibilities onto others, who become resentful. Procrastination destroys teamwork in the workplace and private relationships."

I started thinking about why I procrastinate sometimes, and why I don't procrastinate at other times; and as I started analyzing my "Procrastination Style", I started thinking about how I can make my "Procrastination Style" work for me, and not against me.

When my To-Do List is small, I Procrastinate
but...
The bigger my To-Do List is, the less I Procrastinate

How I figured this out, is on the days I had a lot on my To-Do List, I got all of it done or at least most of it done. I noticed: I could get a week’s worth done in a day or two.
Like the saying "ask a busy person if you want to get something done"

When I only had a couple of things on my to-do list, I felt like I was all caught up, so I would do very little, or even nothing on my to-do list.

So, by knowing this is part of my "Procrastination Style", it is not a problem, I have just been planning accordingly. On the weeks that I have a lot of energy, I load up my to-do list with everything I can think of, especially those things that I have been putting off or procrastinating, because I know on this week I will get them done.

Perfectionism or Procrastination?

Then I started thinking about the other things that I have a tendency to procrastinate on, even on my high-energy big-list weeks; and it was usually things that I wanted to do PERFECT, so now it was a case of: Is my Perfectionism causing my Procrastination?

This is what was happening when I had something on my to-do list that I really wanted to make perfect, and to take my time with: I would set this project aside and say, "I will get all of my other stuff on my list done first. Then I will come back and work on this project, so I can really put all my time and energy into it". I had these grand dreams of how fantastic and how perfect I wanted to do it.

However, with each day, the project would just sit there and look at me, and I would think; I really need to get this done, but I want to be able to take my time. Then the next day would come, and I still did not have the special time that I wanted for this project; then the next day, until I would either, put it somewhere where I wouldn't have to look at it anymore, or I would end up just rushing through it to get it done.

This is also part of my "Procrastination Style": My Perfectionism used to cause me to either procrastinate so long I didn't do it at all, or I would wait until the last minute. Then I had to just get it done quickly, so it turned out only average, and far from the perfect dream I had.

The way I have made my "Procrastination Style" work for me, to overcome my Perfectionism Procrastination is: I have given up putting my projects aside until they are perfect, I just get them done!

Then, once I finish the project and I know it is ready, I can decide if I have more time to spend on it to perfect it, and if not, then it is finished and I mark it off my to-do list.

Procrastination should not be a bad thing in our lives; we just need to know ourselves, and how we perform at our best; working on our strengths and not our weaknesses.

By sharing with you my "Procrastination Styles" and how I have made them work for me, I wanted to give you some ideas on how you can determine your own special "Procrastination Styles" and make them work for you too.

Everything Depends on Sells

Being a great salesperson does not mean just selling the most $ every day, it is about selling your ideas, selling yourself, your services, your products, your company's values etc.; everything we do in our jobs and our lives every day, revolves around sales.

But I hear this a lot "I would love to be able to sell but I am not a salesperson, and I have no experience in sales", but this is not true. If you really think about it; we are all natural born salespeople, we have been selling our entire life, as soon as we learned how to speak our first few words.

Have you ever watched children when they want something, they have the most effective sales techniques (warning: use all techniques short of the laying on the floor kicking and screaming) and they have a knack for getting what they want, when they want it, and it is usually on their own terms.

Children Are Fearless

Children Never Go Into the Sell Thinking about Failing:
They are not thinking to themselves,
· I don't want to say the wrong thing.
· I don't want to look bad.
· I don't want to be a nuisance.
· I don't want to impose.
· I don't want to be rejected or hear no.
· I don't want to blow it!
They are only thinking about how they are going to get a "YES"! They put 100% of all of their energy, concentration and focus on the person they want to say "YES"; and they do not get distracted, thinking about anything else but that person.

Do not Fear Rejection:
We were born Salespeople, but as we get older, we have more fear which covers up our natural born talent.

Fear is probably the biggest deterrent to being successful.

Example: What if you had a great idea but you were afraid to tell your boss, for fear of being rejected or looking bad; then someone else comes up with an idea that is not as good as yours, but they were not afraid, and they get the promotion or opportunity that could have been yours.
Or...
Example: You have been doing nails for years, and you had so many clients you have not had to do any promotion for new clients, for as long as you can remember; but NOW you need to start promoting your nail services, because your clientele is dropping and you need more clients.
Being AFRAID of looking desperate or silly will keep you from getting those NEW Clients, and keep you from building up your business.
Instead of being AFRAID of how you think you might look (which is not how you look, believe me), you should be thinking about all the wonderful benefits, you will be offering all those potential clients, when they have you do their nails.
Remember: Make sure every single one of your clients have some of your cards, and let them know you will be giving incentives for every referral they send you.

We can learn some of the best sales techniques from children; this is a typical phone conversation with my 15 year old son, Taylor Mitchell, on Fri afternoon at about 4:00, I am still at the office, I am tired from a long week and I have about 2-3 more hours of work:

Step #1-Taylor will be PREPPING me for whatever he is going to sell me on. By making the conversation all about me, he is softening me up.

Me: I am proud of you Taylor
Step #2- Through PERSISTENCE and keeping the conversation about me, Taylor will continue relentlessly, to get me involved in the conversation, even though I continue to say "NO", because he knows if he can get me talking then he has a chance of a "YES".

My son Taylor: Mom, can I have my 6 friends spend the night tonight, you know them Jack, Seth, Mark, Chris, Eric and Cody.
Me: No
My son Taylor: Mom, I promise we won't keep you up, so you can go to bed early

My son Taylor: Mom, how about just 4 of my friends and their Mom's will drop them off and pick them up so you don't have to worry about it

Step # 3- Now the NEGOTIATING begins, Taylor knows now that he will be able to negotiate a compromise, even if he does not get everything he wants, and still keeping the conversation about me.

Give Clients More Than What They Pay For.....

Right now, it is important for businesses to give clients more than what they pay for, and give clients more than what they expect.

Most good businesses already do this, but even good businesses are going to have to step it up a few notches.

Businesses that are just mediocre, or charge too much for what the client is getting, are going to have it tough in this New Economy.

It is more important now than at any other time for Businesses to adapt, to fit clients wants and needs.

Clients need convenience - with so many of our clients working; the 9 to 5 Businesses may need to adapt to their clients working schedules.
Clients want Extra Value for every dollar they spend - which means Businesses may need to do more Discounts and Special Promotions.
Clients want better customer service without paying extra - which means Businesses may need to spend more time and more money to train their people better, and raise the bar for everyone working in their business.

Also, businesses may need to re-vamp their customer service policies.

This is an example of an old way of thinking -"I was charging more, and making more profit 10 years ago; I am not going to go backwards and reduce my prices, or increase my hours; I am past that, I don’t need to do that anymore!"
This is an example of a New Economy way of thinking- “Adapting to the New Economy and not fighting against the New Economy, will help my business Thrive!"

Yes, you might have to discount some of your services and/or products, do more promotions, start bartering with local businesses, work days and hours you normally wouldn't work; things you might not have done for years; but in years past we had a different economy, people had more extra money to spend, and they didn't mind paying a little more.

But in this New Economy, it is better to have MORE BUSINESS and MORE CLIENTS, even if that means a little more effort, and a little less profit.

Remember; when our New Economy turns into a Good Economy, people will have more money in their pockets, and with all the Good but hard Changes we have made in our Businesses, and all the Great Lessons we have learned, our Businesses will be more Amazing than ever.

Why do I like to start fresh? Because of the Endless Possibilities…

Thinking about POSSIBILITIES is very POWERFUL and it gets us EXCITED.
And, when we are EXCITED, we have ENERGY and PASSION; which leads to the MOTIVATION we need, to make the changes that we have to make.

We cannot wait until we are perfect
We cannot be afraid our ideas are going to fail
We cannot be afraid of what people might say or think

When we continue to do the same thing, we will get the same results; so we need to look at the things that directly affect our business, and then make the necessary changes.

This is really as simple as it sounds, it is just not easy. It is going to take a little bit of time analyzing, but it can be really fun if you look at it as an adventure.

Sit down and analyze your business, by putting everything into 2 Categories:
Category #1 The things that give GOOD RESULTS.

USA Today reported on a study a couple of years ago.
First, researchers selected people who made New Year's resolutions. Then they divided these people into 2 categories:

Those who made New Year's resolutions and wrote them down, and…
Those who made New Year's resolutions but Did Not write them down.

Twelve months later, the researchers followed up on the people who participated in this study.
WHAT THEY FOUND WAS ASTONISHING!

Of the group of people who made resolutions but DID NOT WRITE THEM DOWN,

Only 4% actually followed through on their resolutions.

HOWEVER, among the group of people who made resolutions (goals) and DID WRITE THEM DOWN…
44% FOLLOWED THROUGH
THIS IS an INCREASE of OVER 1100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this may sound too easy, but let’s put it to the test; write down your Resolutions (Goals) today, and make a copy; or email them to me, and in 2011 we will see how many of our Resolutions we were able to keep.

Remember, set realistic resolutions (goals) and make baby steps; if you get off track, don't quit, just start again where you left off.

My New Year’s Resolution is going to be:
Keep everything in perspective and when things start going too fast, I will not forget what is really important;

Do Not Let Your Holiday Clients Just... Fade Away......

“Now is the time to keep track of every single client who comes into your business.

...While people are out and about, getting Salon services and shopping, you need to build your data base; Turn your Holiday clients into year-round clients.
It is necessary to build your Data-Base, so you can keep your name in front of your clients all year long.
... Do not be embarrassed to keep in touch with clients, even after the Holidays; You want to send out email specials every month, and birthday e-cards to every client, even if they have not been back to your business for awhile.
... The key in business is: Even if clients might not need your services or products right now, when they do, they will remember you, and not go to anyone else.

Use the “Internet” to keep in touch with your clients; it is very inexpensive and efficient. You can use your Blackberry or your computer to do this; E-mails, Facebook, Twitter…….

Remember, Keep it Simple:
All you need is a little bit of your time; creativity; and your clients e-mail addresses.

Once a Month:
Send out a simple 1/2 page email, containing:

A Greeting = 1 sentence
Information that is interesting about your products or services, that can help your clients = 2-3 sentences
A Special Offer = 1 sentence
Always add a Referral Incentive = 1 sentence

All of your contact information; including your physical address, with zip code and phone # with area code.

But, the main thing is; do not WORRY about PERFECTION, just be yourself.

In your email focus only on "Helping" your clients; Talking to your clients, just like you talk to your friends.

Start “Building” Your Data Base and "Writing" your January 1st E-mail Today, so you can get Your Holiday Clients Coming Back in January and February and in March.........
