Perfectionism or Procrastination?

Know Your "Procrastination Style"
And, Make It Work For You...

Has Procrastination ever caused you Physical or Emotional Stress or cost you Financially?

There are many reports about Procrastination causing Health Problems; here is a report from a Professor at a University:

"Just over the course of a single academic term, procrastinating collegeTammy Taylor - CEO, Tammy Taylor Nails Inc.  - Entrepreneur and Business Owner since 1981 students had such evidence of compromised immune systems as more colds and flu, more gastrointestinal problems. And they had insomnia. In addition, procrastination has a high cost to others as well as oneself; it shifts the burden of responsibilities onto others, who become resentful. Procrastination destroys teamwork in the workplace and private relationships."

I started thinking about why I procrastinate sometimes, and why I don't procrastinate at other times; and as I started analyzing my "Procrastination Style", I started thinking about how I can make my "Procrastination Style" work for me, and not against me.

How I figured this out, is on the days I had a lot on my To-Do List, I got all of it done or at least most of it done. I noticed: I could get a week’s worth done in a day or two.
Like the saying "ask a busy person if you want to get something done"

When I only had a couple of things on my to-do list, I felt like I was all caught up, so I would do very little, or even nothing on my to-do list.

So, by knowing this is part of my "Procrastination Style", it is not a problem, I have just been planning accordingly. On the weeks that I have a lot of energy, I load up my to-do list with everything I can think of, especially those things that I have been putting off or procrastinating, because I know on this week I will get them done.

Perfectionism or Procrastination?

Then I started thinking about the other things that I have a tendency to procrastinate on, even on my high-energy big-list weeks; and it was usually things that I wanted to do PERFECT, so now it was a case of: Is my
Perfectionism causing my Procrastination?

This is what was happening when I had something on my to-do list that I really wanted to make perfect, and to take my time with: I would set this project aside and say, "I will get all of my other stuff on my list done first. Then I will come back and work on this project, so I can really put all my time and energy into it". I had these grand dreams of how fantastic and how perfect I wanted to do it.

However, with each day, the project would just sit there and look at me, and I would think; I really need to get this done, but I want to be able to take my time. Then the next day would come, and I still did not have the special time that I wanted for this project; then the next day, until I would either, put it somewhere where I wouldn't have to look at it anymore, or I would end up just rushing through it to get it done.

This is also part of my "Procrastination Style": My Perfectionism used to cause me to either procrastinate so long I didn't do it at all, or I would wait until the last minute. Then I had to just get it done quickly, so it turned out only average, and far from the perfect dream I had.

The way I have made my "Procrastination Style" work for me, to overcome my Perfectionism Procrastination is: I have given up putting my projects aside until they are perfect, I just get them done!

Then, once I finish the project and I know it is ready, I can decide if I have more time to spend on it to perfect it, and if not, then it is finished and I mark it off my to-do list.

Procrastination should not be a bad thing in our lives; we just need to know ourselves, and how we perform at our best; working on our strengths and not our weaknesses.

By sharing with you my "Procrastination Styles" and how I have made them work for me, I wanted to give you some ideas on how you can determine your own special "Procrastination Styles" and make them work for you too.

Everything Depends on Sells

Being a great salesperson does not mean just selling the most $ every day, it is about selling your ideas, selling yourself, your services, your products, your company's values etc.; everything we do in our jobs and our lives every day, revolves around sales.

But I hear this a lot "I would love to be able to sell but I am not a salesperson, and I have no experience in sales", but this is not true. If you really think about it; we are all natural born salespeople, we have been selling our entire life, as soon as we learned how to speak our first few words.Tammy Taylor - CEO, Tammy Taylor Nails Inc.  - Entrepreneur and Business Owner since 1981

Have you ever watched children when they want something, they have the most effective sales techniques (warning: use all techniques short of the laying on the floor kicking and screaming) and they have a knack for getting what they want, when they want it, and it is usually on their own terms.

Children Are Fearless

Children Never Go Into the Sell Thinking about Failing:
They are not thinking to themselves,
· I don't want to say the wrong thing.
· I don't want to look bad.
· I don't want to be a nuisance.
· I don't want to impose.
· I don't want to be rejected or hear no.
· I don't want to blow it!
They are only thinking about how they are going to get a "YES"! They put 100% of all of their energy, concentration and focus on the person they want to say "YES"; and they do not get distracted, thinking about anything else but that person.

Do not Fear Rejection:
We were born Salespeople, but as we get older, we have more fear which covers up our natural born talent.

Fear is probably the biggest deterrent to being successful.

Example: What if you had a great idea but you were afraid to tell your boss, for fear of being rejected or looking bad; then someone else comes up with an idea that is not as good as yours, but they were not afraid, and they get the promotion or opportunity that could have been yours.
Example: You have been doing nails for years, and you had so many clients you have not had to do any promotion for new clients, for as long as you can remember; but NOW you need to start promoting your nail services, because your clientele is dropping and you need more clients.
  • Being AFRAID of looking desperate or silly will keep you from getting those NEW Clients, and keep you from building up your business.
  • Instead of being AFRAID of how you think you might look (which is not how you look, believe me), you should be thinking about all the wonderful benefits, you will be offering all those potential clients, when they have you do their nails.

Remember: Make sure every single one of your clients have some of your cards, and let them know you will be giving incentives for every referral they send you.
People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.

We can learn some of the best sales techniques from children; this is a typical phone conversation with my 15 year old son, Taylor Mitchell, on Fri afternoon at about 4:00, I am still at the office, I am tired from a long week and I have about 2-3 more hours of work:

Step #1-Taylor will be PREPPING me for whatever he is going to sell me on. By making the conversation all about me, he is softening me up.
My phone rings
Me: Hello
My son Taylor: Hello Mom, Are you having a GREAT DAY TODAY!!
Me: Hi Taylor, I am now, you always make me feel better.
My son Taylor: Mom I know you have been working so hard, you need to take it easy this weekend.
Me: Thank you how was your day today?
My son Taylor: I got an A on my test; I know that makes you happy
Me: I am proud of you Taylor

Step #2- Through PERSISTENCE and keeping the conversation about me, Taylor will continue relentlessly, to get me involved in the conversation, even though I continue to say "NO", because he knows if he can get me talking then he has a chance of a "YES".

My son Taylor: Mom, can I have my 6 friends spend the night tonight, you know them Jack, Seth, Mark, Chris, Eric and Cody.
Me: No
My son Taylor: Mom, I promise we won't keep you up, so you can go to bed early
Me: No
My son Taylor: Mom, I love you
Me: No
My son Taylor: Mom, how about just 4 of my friends and their Mom's will drop them off and pick them up so you don't have to worry about it
Me: Taylor, last weekend you guys stayed up too late and you were all tired

Step # 3- Now the NEGOTIATING begins, Taylor knows now that he will be able to negotiate a compromise, even if he does not get everything he wants, and still keeping the conversation about me.
My son Taylor: Mom, I promise we will go to bed early, and I will rest on Sunday so I am ready for school Monday
Me: I don't want that many boys tonight; you had them all over last weekend
My son Taylor: Mom, how about just 2 of the guys and we will get up early and go to breakfast with you
Me: Okay Taylor, that sounds fun, I'll see you in a little while
My son Taylor: Thank you, Mom, you are the best!

Through PREPPING, PERSISTENCE and NEGOTIATIONG we can uncover that natural born salesperson inside of us, and keep our businesses flourishing in 2010!

Give Clients More Than What They Pay For.....

Right now, it is important for businesses to give clients more than what they pay for, and give clients more than what they expect.

Most good businesses already do this, but even good businesses are going to have to step it up a few notches.Tammy Taylor - CEO, Tammy Taylor Nails Inc.  - Entrepreneur and Business Owner since 1981

Here is a simple but powerful rule - always give people
more than what they expect to get.

Businesses that are just mediocre, or charge too much for what the client is getting, are going to have it tough in this New Economy.

It is more important now than at any other time for Businesses to adapt, to fit clients wants and needs.
  • Clients need convenience - with so many of our clients working; the 9 to 5 Businesses may need to adapt to their clients working schedules.

  • Clients want Extra Value for every dollar they spend - which means Businesses may need to do more Discounts and Special Promotions.

  • Clients want better customer service without paying extra - which means Businesses may need to spend more time and more money to train their people better, and raise the bar for everyone working in their business.

Also, businesses may need to re-vamp their customer service policies.

is like stuffing money into a pocket full of holes.

  • This is an example of an old way of thinking -"I was charging more, and making more profit 10 years ago; I am not going to go backwards and reduce my prices, or increase my hours; I am past that, I don’t need to do that anymore!"

Yes, you might have to discount some of your services and/or products, do more promotions, start bartering with local businesses, work days and hours you normally wouldn't work; things you might not have done for years; but in years past we had a different economy, people had more extra money to spend, and they didn't mind paying a little more.

But in this New Economy, it is better to have MORE BUSINESS and MORE CLIENTS, even if that means a little more effort, and a little less profit.

Remember; when our New Economy turns into a Good Economy, people will have more money in their pockets, and with all the Good but hard Changes we have made in our Businesses, and all the Great Lessons we have learned, our Businesses will be more Amazing than ever.

When we continue to do the same thing, we will get the same results; so we need to look at the things that directly affect our business, and then make the necessary changes.

  • This is really as simple as it sounds, it is just not easy. It is going to take a little bit of time analyzing, but it can be really fun if you look at it as an adventure.
  • Sit down and analyze your business, by putting everything into 2 Categories:

  • Category #1 The things that give GOOD RESULTS.
    Continue doing, with NO CHANGES.

  • Category #2 The things that give BAD RESULTS.
    Yes, make CHANGES (as quickly as possible).

You will be amazed at how many NEW IDEAS you will think of, while doing this.

I have a very creative mind, and I am always coming up with ideas; not all of my ideas are good, but I have always known if I come up with enough of them, I give myself a chance at some of them turning out good, and a few turning out Great.

Take chances; make mistakes, that’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.
