Yes, We Can Make a Difference!

When I think about Thanksgiving, the first thing I think about is helping others that are in need. And, right now it seems like there are so many people in need it can be overwhelming, but to help me keep everything in perspective I always remember the Starfish Story.

A man was walking along the beach one evening and saw a little boy throwing starfish that had been washed ashore by the tide into the sea.
He thought the boy was silly in trying to save the starfish, as he knew it was impossible to throw every single one of the starfish back into the sea, with the tides washing them up.
The man walked right up to the boy and asked him why he was trying to save the starfish.
"You see, sir, the starfish would die if they are left on the shore.
They need to be in the sea in order to live," answered the boy.
"But son, how are you going to save all of them? Every time you put one back, another would be washed up. It doesn't matter to them, son."
The boy picked up a starfish, looked at the man and said, "But sir, it matters to this one." Then he threw the starfish back into the sea.

I would like to share with you what my long time client and friend, Rachelle, is doing to make a difference.

Hi Tammy,
As you know, every year at Provence Salon we adopt a family for the holidays.
This year I received my recipient early!!!

While talking to my client Cathie Raymond (she works for Marana School district), she mentioned a young man who was living on his own, homeless, living in the washes around the school, yet still going to school with the desire to graduate. What an amazing young man. I am so saddened, flabbergasted, yet in awe of someone so young, who appears to have no support, yet still wants to finish school.

Jordan is 19 years old and attends Mountain View High School; he is registered as a Junior.

Tonight I received the honor of meeting Jordan. He is a handsome, sweet, intelligent, articulate young man. His spirit amazes me!! Jordan was reluctant at first and did not want to accept any help but I made him understand he needed to let us help.

Jordan is now living in an abandoned car. He has no electricity, and no means to cook meals. His access to refrigeration is VERY limited (he only has a 2 cu ft. cooler). He had requested a food box for thanksgiving, however, I have been told he will be now be spending Thanksgiving with a family, if this falls through I have offered to have him spend Thanksgiving with my family (that may be torture for him LOL).

The latest update from Rachelle:

Hello everyone!!! I have gotten an overwhelming response from several people about Provence's adopted son....Jordan. I have had several phone calls from people saying they just cannot stop thinking about him!! I feel the same. I don't have the heart to wait for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas with this we are trying to do what we can NOW!!

One goal I am hoping for is getting him a place to live. Every chilly night I think of him, as I sleep comfortably in my bed with a roof over my head! is the temporary plan. There is a hotel near the school that offers weekly rates. I called the hotel to find out if we pay a month or two in advance if they could give us a better rate. When you pay for 4 weeks you get the 5th week for free. This at least buys us 5 weeks to see what other options we can come up with. I have called my wonderful client/friend who had offered her home to Jordan and she is pitching in $200 (I am not sure if you want me to tell everyone your name wonderful friend, so for now I will keep it that way out of respect for you...maybe I will tell everyone later...ha-ha!!!), I also have another client (again not sure about using her name) who is willing to pitch in $100...thanks to you girlfriend, I also have another who will put in $50, thank you!!!! There is a onetime $50 deposit that needs to be paid and the weekly rate before tax is $169.99. Total with tax for the 5 weeks is $825.50.

I had enough money to pay for 4 weeks, which gets him a 5th week free, and the deposit. I have $95 left over, which I will be using to start raising enough money to pay for an additional 5 weeks. (Total is $775) Right now he is paid through December 21st.

I just had the honor of getting him settled in his new temporary home. I personally will sleep better tonight knowing that he is safe and warm!!

The only request I will make of Jordan is that he continues to go to school, and to let us continue to help him the best we can, so that in the near future he can help himself.

I know things are difficult for all of us right now...but I am willing to give up some Star bucks, fast food, or frivolous shopping to help Jordan out!!

I have received just as much if not more from this young man than I could possibly give to him!!! I have pink slips for utilities sitting on my table, but situations such as Jordan's remind me that I don't have it so bad!!! I am also amazed by how giving and good people are, quite often I lose my faith in the basic good in people...again...thanks to Jordan....I am realizing people are not so bad.

What Business Are You In?

Does every single person you came in contact with today, know what business you are in?

You can be the very best at what you do; you can be the most experienced person in your field; you can give the best customer service; you can have the most extensive education; you can have the best products; but, if no one knows who you are, how are you going to build your business?
"You have to get the clients to come to you, before they will know how FABULOUS YOU ARE".

Every day you need to be promoting your business; making sure everyone you meet knows what you do; even if some of the people you talk to seem like they would not need your services or products. Tammy Taylor

Even if you are not in sales, or you do not own your own business, you still need to promote where you work, and what you do; because, if you can get a “new” client for the business you work for, this will help the business grow (Job security).

It is the responsibility of “everyone” in the business to promote, not just the advertising or sales departments.

When I first started out in business, I was 18 years old, and I had to get as many clients as I could, and in the least amount of time; because I did not have, a reserve bank account. Every week I needed to make money, or I wasn't going to be able to pay the bills for that week. When you have to make money, and you have no choice, you will be surprised at how creative you can become; as long as you never let the option of: “not” making money pop into your head.

When there is “no option” your brain can figure out amazing things.

I have always said "Either: WE DO IT, or WE DO IT; we have NO OPTION".

This puts us in the right frame of mind, to promote our business.

I did not have an advertising budget when I first started my business; the only thing I had in my budget was: "pay the rent, so I can stay in business another month"; so, I had to have a lot of creativity, excitement & motivation.

Promotion is as important to running a successful business, as homework is to our children: even though no one wants to do it, everyone has to do it, to be successful!

It is necessary to spend at least one hour a day, on business promotion or planning how to promote your business; and you can't rely on other people to do it for you, no matter how great your product is or your service.

Remember: Make sure every new client that walks through your business doors or calls on the phone feels welcome, like they are the most important person in the world to you.

There are many different ways to promote your business.

Make a 4-color Business Card that advertises you, and what you do.

A 4-color Business Card is more like a mini-brochure that is easily placed in a wallet, so they will keep it and they will not throw it away.
  • Pass out your “Business Cards/ mini-color brochures” to every single person you come in contact with, every day.
  • Especially make sure your own established clients always have at least 5 of your “Business Cards/ mini-color brochures” with them at all times and ask them to pass them out. (Your established clients are your best advertisement.) And, tell them for every referral, you will give them a little discount or a gift.
  • Make sure you promote your business to all of your neighboring businesses, give them a “Neighbor Discount” and ask them to display your “Business Cards/ mini-color brochures” in their business. And, for every referral, you will give them a little extra discount or a free gift.

Your GOAL is: Pass out 10 “Business Cards/ mini-color brochures” a day. (EVERY DAY)

Stay Positive, Pumped Up and Ready to Win!

"Okay Team, stay POSITIVE, remember, you are the best, you are the most talented, you have practiced longer and worked harder than any other team and today we are going to WIN!" and the Team knows they are ready and they are PUMPED UP and READY to WIN!
But, they never leave the locker room!

We aren't going to WIN without playing the game; but, if we play in the game, we also have a chance we might lose.

Thinking Positive doesn't always mean we will win every time, but we will get in the middle of the game and POSITIVELY give it our 100% every single time; giving us a 100% chance that we could WIN!
BUT, Not even leaving the locker room will give us a GUARANTEED LOSS.

Getting up every morning and saying I will choose to stay Positive today, no matter what happens will help make our quality of life better.

Negative Thinking and a Self Defeating attitude causes a lot of stress; and, when we are under a lot of stress, our immune system gets run down; making us more prone to all of the dangerous viruses that are spreading so quickly. It could very well be possible that all the added stress people are under right now, could be helping these viruses spread.

"Every day we all have problems and challenges and possibly disappointments, but, the only difference in each of us, is how we deal with them."

Thinking Positive and saying: "I CAN deal with this, and I WILL deal with this"; gives us a 100% starting chance that we will conquer these problems and challenges, than if, when a problem arises, we start Thinking Negatively and saying:
"I Can't deal with this, and, I won't deal with this, because this is not fair"; then we have already self defeated ourselves, giving ourselves no chance.

"Thinking Positive Does Not Solve Our Problems, but, Thinking Positively Makes Us More Positive; so We Can Conquer Our Problems"

Thinking Positive? or Denial?
The Bills are due and I go on a $500.00 Shopping Spree, and put it on my credit card; saying to myself, "something will work out because I am Thinking Positive".
This is not Thinking Positive, this is DENIAL.


The Bills are due and I am Thinking Positive; I say:"If I STAY POSITIVE and do not get discouraged, I can put together a plan and try to conquer this".
This will give me 100% better chance to conquer the problem, than doing nothing.
This is Positive Thinking.

To be more pro-active and to know you are doing everything you can, you need to show up at work every day and tell yourself, "I will POSITIVELY give 100% today", and before you leave work, do ONE MORE THING; so you start the next day ONE THING AHEAD.
Then, when you leave work you will feel better about yourself and your accomplishments; which will help you KEEP YOUR POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

Consistency: Boring?

Consistency is how we build our business
Consistency is how we create good leadership
Consistency is how we raise our children
Consistency is how we further our education
Consistency is how we stay healthy

We know we need consistency each day, but we get bored;
Excitement is what we want!

Here is good little story:
The Ants and the Grasshopper
The ants were busy every day working - carrying one grain at a time and storing away for winter. The grasshopper just wanted some excitement and to have fun; he thought the ants were boring.

Months passed; the grasshopper had been having lots of fun and the ants had just kept working consistently; and then when winter came the ants had plenty of food and the grasshopper was dying of hunger.

-Now I don’t want to be the ants or the grasshopper I want to have Excitement and fun and I want the results of consistent behavior without the boredom of consistency.
I want both!

We have a little saying in our family "every day can't be a party", which to us means we can't eat Chocolate fudge sundays everyday, but we can once a week; or we can't be lazy and just play video games all day, but we can for just a little while each day; or we can't skip working out every day, but we can skip it once a week.

I call it the 80/20 RULE

I use 80/20 RULE with a lot of things and it is really pretty accurate.

I need a healthy balance of Consistency and Excitement
80% Consistency (the Now) and 20% Excitement (the WOW)

The WOW can be anything we want to make exciting.
In our job we know we have to do our everyday responsibilities, but we need to set apart time to have some fun at work, and to work on NEW and Exciting things.

A business has to have 80% Consistency (the NOW) in order to run smoothly, but it also needs the 20% Excitement (the WOW), so people do not get bored.

Clients and employees like the 80% Consistency (the NOW), because they can depend on it; Consistency makes them feel secure, but they also need the 20% Excitement (the WOW), or they will get bored and look for excitement somewhere else.

If 8O% is Excitement (the WOW) and only 20% Consistency (the NOW), then you will not have a solid company; the infrastructure will be weak and there is no consistency making clients and employees feel insecure.

For example: When building a house that is made to last, about 80% of the budget has to be to build a strong, firm foundation and infrastructure, then about 20% of the budget, the WOW, can be for the cosmetics, the special things that make it different and special from the rest.

If it was built with only 20% spent on a firm foundation and infrastructure, and 80% was all cosmetic, superficially just to look good, it will come crumbling down.

Another Example:
How about when we are building a beautiful set of sculptured nails in one hour:
60 minutes x 80% = 48 minutes of our time will be spent on Consistency, building the strong foundation and structure so the nails will last.
And 20% = 12 minutes of our time will be spent on the WOW, customizing the shape and the color for each customer.

The structure and the Consistency is the same for every client but the WOW; the shape and the color is customized for every client.

So we NEED BOTH; we NEED Consistency (the NOW), and we NEED Excitement (the WOW), or nothing we do will have balance.

Keeping things in perspective with the 80/20 rule: Can help give us the Excitement we need to keep us from getting bored, and the Consistency, the structure and the security that we need for balance.
